Recently we announced to our local Nanny2u parenting community that we’d love to shine the spotlight on some of our fellow local businesses that are doing their thing to contribute to the lives of busy parents and families. In our first edition of the local Nanny2u Mumpreneur feature, we speak with Prue Caroll from Cake Tin Hire. Cake Tin Hire is north shore based (Sydney) and takes the hassle out of planning those inevitable parties. Plus, she saves you space. Now that’s a win in my books!!!

Tell us about Cake Tin Hire and why you do what you do?

I am a mum of twin girls and every year I have purchased two brand new, good quality cake tins to make their birthday cakes. Now I’m quite lucky because I have lots of storage space, but the cost alone was crazy given I only used each tin once.

When my girls started kindergarten in 2016, I realised that I wasn’t the only one hoarding cake tins!

Like a lot of 5 year olds, they go to a lot of birthday parties! When at these parties, I noticed that most times the birthday cake was home-made and filled with love. Plus, a lot of the parties we attend are for our twin friends – meaning more often than not, there are two cakes! 

I also noticed that especially with the popularity of Pinterest, more and more people are doing cake decorating at home, which means they need a good variety of cake shapes and decorating designs. But they don’t always have the space to store loads of tins.

Which gave me the initial idea for the business, and I created Cake Tin Hire. It’s the perfect business for me, and for you!

Why pay for an expensive cake tin you will use once and then have to store taking up cupboard space? Save money and space – hire a cake tin.

How did you get started with your business?

My girls started school this year and I wanted a business that gave me flexibility to fit in around school hours. I wanted something that would still make it possible to volunteer at my daughters’ school, and take the time to participate in their extra curricular activities.

It was also important that I could have something that would still be manageable if my children were sick. With all of that in mind, I also wanted something that still kept me stimulated and motivated.

Who’s your biggest supporter (or mentor) that helps you to continue to strive each day?

My biggest supporter and mentor is a friend who is also a mum to twin girls the same age as mine.  She started her own business less than 12 months ago, and it continues to grow every month winning big name clients.  She’s smart, confident and driven. She’s also a single mum, and yet she still finds the time to help me. What can I say, she is amazing!

Tell us about a lesson you’ve learnt since being in business?

Prior to having children I always worked as an EA or PA to Managing Director’s or CEO’s. I ran offices, and managed major events and client functions, so I’m very familiar with business at the top end. Having had 5 years out of the workforce, the biggest learning curve for me has been technology. A lot changes in 5 years.

What role do you most enjoy in your business?

I absolutely love talking with my customers! Everyone has different needs for a cake tin – be it a baby shower, birthday, anniversary, or even a simple cake to enjoy over a dinner party with friends.

What can we expect to see from you (and Cake Tin Hire) in the next 6 to 12 months?

I hope to add more variety to our range of cake tins for hire to be able to service both “at home” bakers and also professional bakers. I would love for Cake Tin Hire to be very present and conveniently located somewhere where busy parents can go to get all of their needs – cake tins, baking instructions, and decorating things for their specific needs.

I’d like to supply the cupcake cases, the lolly bags, and even the party planning tools to make the entire process more enjoyable for those busy parents who simply don’t have the time to do it all themselves.
