Running Under The Sprinkler Mumpreneur Feature
Meet a local mum who literally captures life – at it’s best, and also perhaps during those raw moments that can only be described as pure ‘living.’ Jacqui, of Running Under The Sprinkler Photography, is a local business owner who identified both her passion, and a demand in the market, and jumped full steam ahead to design the life she loves. Running Under The Sprinkler is a lifestyle photography business capturing your precious moments.
Tell us about Running Under The Sprinkler and why you do what you do?
“I photograph… life, as it happens.”
I love my job! I have photographed weddings and fashion in exotic overseas locations.
I get to meet so many lovely people. I get to cuddle newborns all the time! I photograph pregnant mummies underwater, dancers floating on pointe shoes, grooms crying as they say their vows of love, crazy zany kids of all sorts, huge families celebrating grandparents grand birthdays, and quiet, real moments in the home. It’s the best!
How did you get started with your business?
I’ve been a photographer since I left school. For a long time I thought that the only way to earn a living being a photographer was to be in real estate photography. But once digital came in, and I moved away from the city, real estate jobs were thin on the ground.
It wasn’t until I was working as a kindergarten teacher that I realised the market for family and newborn photography was so big. After the parents saw the photos I took at kindy of the kids, the requests started coming in for private photo sessions.
Fate stepped in when the kindergarten I was working in needed to lay off staff, and so photography became my full-time job.
That was a scary moment. As the sole supporter of my three kids, I really want my earnings to be reliable, and I do feel like I am winging it every day. But I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Who’s your biggest supporter (or mentor) that helps you to continue to strive each day?
It sounds so cheesy, but I have to say it’s my kids. Twin girls, now 14, and their 16 year old brother. We really are a team. They even work for me in the business sometimes too. They are such awesome kids, and they keep me going in those frequent 80 hour working weeks!
Tell us about a lesson you’ve learnt since being in business?
“I have learnt that you can have a successful business and stay true to yourself and your ideals.”
I run my business as ethically as I can, and I endeavour to have the smallest environmental footprint too. This does mean I won’t be making a million any time soon (actually I’m way below the average wage), but I am still happy that I can do what I love, be true to myself, and provide well for my kids!
What should our Nanny2u parenting community know about Running Under The Sprinkler?
I’m so passionate about what I do. My work, my art, and being able to ‘give back’. I just love taking the photos!
